ATP Rotterdam: Vasek Pospisil on course to play Andy Murray after first round win

Vasek Pospisil: Could face Andy Murray in second round

Canada's Vasek Pospisil beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round of the ABN AMRO ATP event in Rotterdam to set up a potential second round meeting with Andy Murray.

Pospisil dispatched his German opponent in two sets 6-4 6-2 and will now meet the winner of Wednesday's match between top seed Andy Murray and Nicholas Mahut.

Also in the afternoon session, second seed Milos Raonic survived a scare against Russian qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov to progress to second round in three sets, 6-7 6-1 7-5. Canada's No 1, who hammered down 19 aces, will play Italy's Simone Bolleli for a place in the quarter-finals.

A relieved Raonic said: "It can be tough to adapt to match conditions, As a qualifier, Kuznetsov already had two matches on this surface. I was behind, but I'm happy with how I fought today. That's the most important thing for me,"

Third seed Tomas Berdych survived a ferocious comeback from Germany's Tobias Kamke before advancing 6-1 7-5. Kamke fought back from 5-2 down in the second set to level it up, before the Czech reasserted himself to win through.

Eighth seed Gilles Simon needed three sets to beat Portugal's young star Joao Sousa 5-7 6-3 6-2.

"It was a really difficult match," said the world No 19. "I got on top of him in the first set, but he came back to win the set (from 5-2 down). In the second set I had to come from a break down. I was not particularly happy with my game, but my only solution was to fight as much as possible."

The Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky booked a second round spot with a 6-2 7-6 (9-7) win over Spain's Marcel Granollers. Stakhovsky will play Austria's rising stat Dominic Thiem for a place in the quarter-finals.

France's Jeremy Chardy will meet his compatriot Simon in the second round after his opponent, another Frenchman, Julien Benneteau retired with injury.

Meanwhile, Murray pulled out of the doubles competition after his partner Gilles Muller withdrew with sickness.

Murray's brother Jamie replaced him, along with his partner John Peers, and the duo seized their opportunity.

Murray and Peers first beat Roberto Bautista Agut and Joao Sousa 6-3 6-4, and were then awarded a walkover against the top seeds Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

And Jamie Murray was quick to acknowledge his good fortune, saying on Twitter: "Woke up this morning, booked flight home then packed my bags and checked out hotel. Tonight I'm in semis of @abnamrowtt #theluckiestloser".
